At the outbreak of War Bradford was home to one battalion of the regular army and two territorial battalions

Regular army - Army Service Corps headquarters Bradford Moor Barracks

Territorial Army – enlisted for home defence in the UK only
  • 6th Battalion Prince of Wales’s Own (West Yorkshire Regiment) (Territorial Force) headquarters at Belle Vue Barracks
  • 2nd West Riding Brigade Royal Field Artillery (Territorial Force) headquarters at Valley Parade

There were also Bradford squadrons of the Yorkshire Dragoons and Yorkshire hussars whose headquarters were at Doncaster and York.
The Bradford Pals were raised by the newly formed Citizens' Army League in responce to Kitchener's call for more men.

Bradford men also joined a range of other regiments, the Labour Exchange transformed into an information bureau providing details of different regiments and their pay, terms of service and recruiting incentives.
