26 – 2 Oct

Bradford Horse Owners

Bradford Horse Owners’ Association discussed the proposal to secure more horses for the Corporation Team Labour Department in place of those taken by the military.

 

Blankets for Territorials

Following appeals for donations of blankets, for members of Bradford’s Territorial battalions, over 1,000 have been dispatched.

 

 

 

3 – 9 Oct

Municipal Council Elections Suspended

Councillors to be re-elected unopposed, they also agreed that if peace was not declared before 30th September 1915 then councillors would again be re-elected unopposed.

 

Bradford Grammar School Officers Corps

It was decided to form an Officers Training Corps. The Junior OTC would take men up to the age of 20 and a separate senior OTC corps would also be formed. Around 150 boys had already volunteers to make up the Corps.

 

Bradford Pals Uniform Contracts

Bradford citizens’ army League have been very busy dealing with tenders for the many articles of clothing and equipment for the men. “All good have now been arranged for except the outer clothing, in regard of which the colour has not yet been settled on.”

 

 

Antwerp Attacked

6 Zepplins and German guns on the ground launched a fierce attack.

 

Battle of Aisne

“This is the 67th day of the war, and the 26th day of what began as the Battle of the Aisne, which has extended its front for a length of more than 300 miles, right away north to Belgium. The battle has lasted two days longer than Mukden, the longest battle that the world had ever seen before this war.”

10 -16 Oct

Belgian Refuges Arrive in Bradford

250 Belgian refugees arrive in Bradford and are accommodated temporarily at Central baths.

 

Town Hall Stairway Unveiled

The grand new stairway which links the old portion of the Town Hall with the extension was opened by the Lord Mayor (Alderman John Arnold).

 

Bradford Cottage Baths

The City Road Cottage Baths opened bringing the total to 8 baths in the City. The baths were for males only and contain 9 slipper baths, one douche bath two lavatories and attendance room.

 

 

 

17 – 23 Oct

6th West Yorks Colours given to Lord Mayor

The reserve battalion of the 6th West Yorks presented to the Lord Mayor their colours for safe keeping during the war.

 

Mrs Pankhurst in Bradford

Her speech at St George’s Hall instead of appealing for recruits for the militants cause she appealed for recruits to Kitchener’s Army.

 

Bradford Prisoners of War

“Bradford has been almost entirely free from German spy scares… yet police authorities are taking all necessary precautions to ensure the safety of the inhabitants.” More stringent Government orders require the arrest of yet more German, Austrians and Hungarians

 

 

24 – 30 Oct

Lady Mayoress War Guild

During the last week 1,980 garments were received at the Town Hall, bringing the total number of garments since the outbreak of war to 16,217.

 

First Wounded Soldiers in Bradford

A party of 50 soldiers were brought from Becketts Park hospital, Leeds. They were taken to the Bradford Royal Infirmary and the Bradford Royal Eye and Ear Hospital.

 

Bradford City Volunteers (BCV)

New headquarters of the BCV opened in Leeds Road in addition to 12 drilling stations. The Athletes Volunteer force will also be amalgamated with the BCV.

Fireworks

Home Office proclamation regarding prohibiting the use of fireworks on 5th November does NOT apply to Bradford

 

University Boat Race

For the first time in over half a century there will be no University boat race next year, all racing will be postponed until after the war.
