On the 3 August the first men from Bradford departed from Midland Station, crowds had gathered to see the men off and tearful farewells to families made. Three of the men were post office workers, one a Corporation tramway man, one worked for Midland Station and two were Police Constables.
Several nurses from Bradford Royal Infirmary were also summoned to naval headquarters and Sisters Wroe and Stevenson left on the 5 August
